📚 About the GI Bill Book Stipend

The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides an annual book and supplies stipend of up to $1,000 per year for eligible veterans. This is in addition to your tuition coverage and Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA).

How it works: The VA pays the stipend directly to you based on your rate of pursuit (how many credits you're taking). Full-time students receive the full amount; part-time students receive a prorated amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the stipend paid?

The VA pays the book stipend directly to your bank account each semester. You receive 50% of your annual stipend in fall and 50% in spring. If you attend summer classes, the payment is prorated.

Can I use it for online classes?

Yes! If you're taking online classes, you still receive the book stipend. The amount is based on your enrollment rate (how many credits you're taking), not whether the classes are online or in-person.

What if I don't use the full amount?

The book stipend is paid to you directly. You can use it for any educational materials or supplies. Any unused amount is yours to keep.

How does rate of pursuit affect my stipend?

Your book stipend is reduced if you're not enrolled full-time. Full-time gets $1,000/year, 3/4-time gets $750/year, 1/2-time gets $500/year, and less than 1/2-time gets $250/year.

Is the book stipend taxable?

No. GI Bill benefits, including the book stipend, are tax-free. The VA does not issue a 1099 form for these benefits.
