Understanding BAH-DIFF: Eligibility and Rules
Military pay regulations are complex, especially when family structures change. **BAH-DIFF (BAH Differential)** is a housing allowance type that often confuses service members who are divorced, separated, or single parents paying child support.
What is BAH-DIFF?
BAH-DIFF is the difference between the "With Dependents" and "Without Dependents" BAQ (Basic Allowance for Quarters) rates. It is a smaller allowance designated for members who are assigned to single-type quarters (like barracks) but are authorized to receive a basic allowance solely because they pay child support.
Who is Eligible?
You may be eligible for BAH-DIFF if:
- You are assigned to single government quarters (barracks/dormitory).
- You do NOT have physical custody of your child(ren).
- You pay court-ordered child support.
- Your child support payment is **equal to or greater** than the BAH-DIFF amount.
The Calculation Rule
This is the most critical rule: **If your court-ordered support is LESS than the applicable BAH-DIFF rate, you are NOT eligible for BAH-DIFF.**
Example:
- BAH-DIFF rate for your rank: $300
- Court-ordered support: $250
- Result: You receive $0 BAH-DIFF.
Example 2:
- BAH-DIFF rate for your rank: $300
- Court-ordered support: $400
- Result: You receive the full $300 BAH-DIFF.
Important Note
If you live off-base and are authorized **BAH at the With-Dependents rate** because you pay child support, the rules are different. Generally, paying adequate child support allows a non-custodial parent living off-base to receive BAH-WITH. However, you cannot double-dip; you won't get BAH-DIFF on top of regular BAH.
Always consult your Finance Office (S-1/IPAC) with your court orders to determine your exact entitlement.
