Partial BAH: Who Qualifies for Extra Barracks Pay?
Most single service members living in government quarters (barracks or dorms) assume they get $0 in housing allowance. While true for the main BAH, many are unaware of **Partial BAH**.
What is Partial BAH?
Partial BAH is a very small monthly payment given to service members without dependents who are assigned to single-type government quarters and occupy them. It is not meant to cover rent (since you live for free) but is a historical remnant of the pay code structure.
How Much is It?
The rates are modest, typically ranging from **$7 to $50 per month** depending on your rank. For example:
- E-1 to E-3: Approx. $7-10/month
- E-5: Approx. $15/month
- O-1: Approx. $13/month
Why Does It Exist?
It exists mostly for legislative continuity to ensure every service member receives some form of "Basic Allowance for Housing," even if it's token. It helps differentiate their total compensation.
Do I Need to Apply?
It should be automatic. Check your **LES (Leave and Earnings Statement)** under the "Entitlements" column. If you see "BAH PARTIAL," you are receiving it. If you live in the barracks and don't see it, check with your admin section—it's not much, but it buys a pizza!
