MHA Calculator Guide: How It Works and Step-by-Step
The Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) calculator helps GI Bill recipients estimate their education housing benefits. Understanding this calculation is crucial for student veterans planning their budgets.
Key Differences: BAH vs MHA
| Factor | BAH | MHA |
|---|---|---|
| Recipients | Active Duty | GI Bill Users |
| Calculation | Rank/Location/Dep | E-5 with Dependents Rate |
| Payment | Included in Paycheck | Paid after month end |
How MHA is Calculated
The VA determines MHA by:
- Taking the BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents for the school's ZIP code.
- Applying location modifiers if applicable.
- Adjusting for enrollment intensity (Rate of Pursuit).
Using Our MHA Calculator
Follow these steps:
1. Select School Location
Important notes:
- The main campus location determines the rate for most students.
- Online Students: Benefits are capped at half the national average MHA rate (approx $900-1000).
2. Enter Enrollment Status
MHA is prorated based on your course load:
- Full-time = 100% rate
- Greater than 50% = Prorated (rounded to nearest 10%)
- 50% or less = No MHA allowance
Special MHA Situations
Break Pay Calculations
You generally do NOT receive MHA during:
- School holidays (Winter break, Summer break)
- Periods between terms
